put mushrooms, carrots, shallots, miso paste,
wine, vinegar, and coconut aminos in a
sealed container and refrigerate

take to your boyfriend’s house

text your boyfriend asking him to cook the
rice

when you arrive
sauté contents of the container in vegan
butter
let sit on medium heat until some liquid has
cooked off
add spinach leaves
cook down
serve over rice

I was reading my stories again
in the park, did not ask you
to meet me there
but I wanted to cook for us and
you had your stories to watch later
so I rooted around in my brain
something for us
memorable as an onion
commemoration of tenderness and
simple enough
to respect both of our restrictions
while remaining flavorful
better with age and proper use
past fermented
and essential

I prep everything alone
at home, where I am comfortable
cubing and quartering while
surfacing pent tears
and somehow adding even as
it looks like I am taking away
I am putting myself out here,
trying to stay cool

the container leaks in my bag

you let me empty everything and
dry it

sit on the couch and offer me help
as I bustle around your kitchen
claiming more of the space and
although I slightly burn things,
just a little
you still say it’s delicious
and we easily
could eat more
